GULLIVER'S TRAVELS (CHAPTER ONE)

1)Where was Lemuel Gulliver born?
He was born in a large farm in the middle of England.
2)What did Lemuel Gulliver  do after he finished school?
He  studied in Cambridge for three years .
3)What did Lemuel Gulliver  study ? why?
He studied medicine to be a surgeon.
4)What did Lemuel Gulliver do while he was studying?
     He worked as an apprentice for a famous surgeon called Mr Bates .  
5)Although he admired Mr Bates, he didn’t enjoy working as a surgeon. Give a reason
Because he liked to travel round the world.
6)What did Lemuel Gulliver   do in his free time? Why?
Lemuel Gulliver  learned how to sail so that one day he could leave England and explore the world.
7)What favour did Mr Bates do to Lemuel Gulliver?
Mr Bates helped him to get work as a surgeon on a ship called the Swallow.
8)How long did Lemuel Gulliver work on the ship?              For three years  and a half .
9) Where did the ship go during this period?                             Round the eastern seas.
10)Who did Lemuel Gulliver  get married to?
A kind woman called Mary Burton.
11)what did Lemuel Gulliver decide to do after getting married?
 He  decided to stay in London with his new wife for a few years.
12)What prevented him from settling down in London?
Work was not easy to find because there was no work in London.
13)How did solve the problem of getting a job?                            He took a job on a ship.
14)How did Lemuel Gulliver earn good money?
He  travelled around the world for six years.
15)What did do in his free time?
In his free time, he read books and taught himself to speak several languages.
16)What was the ship Lemuel Guuliver got a job called?                  It was called the Antelope.
17)When did life change? How?
His life changed in 1699 after he got a new job on a the Antelope.
18)How long had been at sea before the ship Antelope was hit by a violent storm?
For about two months .
19)what happened to Antelope when it was hit by a violent storm?
The ship was blown far away from its chosen route .
20)How \ why did they lose some of their crew?                         The ship was  blown onto a rock.
21)What happened when the ship was blown onto the rock?
There was a terrible crash and  the ship sank.
22)What did Lemuel Gulliver do before the ship sank?
He climbed into a lifeboat with five other sailors and they were able to escape.
23)How did the Sailors meet their end?
A huge wave hit them and they  were all thrown into the sea.
24)How was Gulliver lucky after the storm and the huge wave?
He managed to climb up a lifeboat.
25)What decided the direction Gulliver went in?
The wind and the waves decided the direction he went in.
26)How was Gulliver when he reached the land?                     He was wet, cold and exhausted.
27)Why did Gulliver think it was a desert island when he reached it?
Because when he looked around, there were no houses or people.
28)What did Gulliver do when he reached the island?
He  lay down and fell into a long sleep.
29)Why couldn’t Gulliver stand up when he woke up in the morning?
Because his arms, his legs and even his hair were all fastened to the ground.
30)What was impossible for Gulliver to do when he woke up? Why?
He found that this was impossible to stand up .
31)How was Gulliver tied to the ground?
Thin ropes were tied around his body and neck.                                                                                                
32)What was moving up Gulliver’s body? What was it like?
It was a human, but this human was only about fifteen centimetres tall.
33)What was the small man carrying?                                   He was carrying a bow and arrow.
34)How did Gulliver feel when he saw those tiny\ very small people?
He was surprised to see people like that.
35) How did the little people behave on hearing Gulliver’s voice?
They moved away from him because they were frightened.
36)It was wise of Gulliver to stop fighting\ freeing himself. Explain
When he started to free himself, they began to shoot their arrows at him
37)What could Gulliver hear them doing?
He could hear them cutting wood next to them.
38)What did they build ? what for?
They built a wooden platform for their king to stand on it.             
39)Where was the platform built?
It was built in front of Gulliver head, so that the king could talk to Gulliver.
40)How did Gulliver know that the man was the important man\ official\ the ruler?
The man was wearing important –looking clothes. There was a servant on each side of his.
41)At what point could Gulliver lift his head?
When the ropes round his head were cut free after building the platform for their king.
42)Why couldn’t Gulliver understand the important man\ official\ the ruler?
Because he was speaking a strange language that Gulliver couldn’t understand.
42)What did Gulliver tell the important man\ official\ the ruler after finishing his talk?
He told him that his name was Gulliver and he came from England. He told him that his ship was lost in the storm and he swam to the beach.
43)How could Gulliver communicate with the king of the island although he didn’t speak their language?                                                                    He used sign language.
44)What showed that the important man\ official\ the ruler understood Gulliver’s message?
He ordered his servants to bring Gulliver food and drinks.
45)What did the servants bring Gulliver ?
They brought baskets of food and little containers of water.
46)How could the servant feed Gulliver ?
They put ladders against my shoulder and carried the baskets and containers up to my mouth.
47)How did the servants feel while feeding Gulliver?
They seemed pleased but surprised.
48)When was there mutual trust  between Gulliver and the little people ?
After feeding him, little people realised that they could trust him.
49)How did Gulliver know that the visitor was king?
The other men bowed to him and from his clothes.
50)What did Gulliver ask the king to do? What was the king’s reply?
He asked him to set me free but he refused.
51)How did the king comfort\ relieve Gulliver about being trapped\ tied?
He told him not worry.
52)How was Gulliver moved to the capital city of their country which was called Lilliput?
They put him on a strange machine that had many wheels and was pulled by a team of horses.                                                   53)What had this machine been designed for?
 To carry heavy trees and was pulled by a team of horses, each horse about eleven centimetres tall.
54)How did the little men treat Gulliver’s injuries on his hand?
Some of the men poured some medicine on the cuts where the arrows had hit his hand.                           55)How far was the city?
The city was perhaps a kilometre away.
56)How long did it take Gulliver to go to he city/ reach the city?
It took all that night for the machine to carry him there.
57) Why did Gulliver sleep for most of the  journey?
Because they had put some medicine in his food that made him sleep.
58)When did Gulliver wake up?
 When one of the soldiers put a pole up his nose.
59)What did one of the soldier do when Gulliver woke up and sneezed? Why?
 He quickly ran away when Gulliver woke up and sneezed because he was frightened.
60)Why did they choose this place for  Gulliver to live in?
Because it was the largest on the land. No one lived there.
61)Describe the building Gulliver would stay in.
 The building had a small garden around it which you could enter through two gates, each one a little more than a metre high.
62)How did the king prevent Gulliver from escaping from his new house?
He asked some men to fasten his  legs to the gates using metal chains.
63)What was there opposite his new home? What was it for?
Opposite his new home there was a tower which was about two metres high. The King went to the top of this tower with his men so they could watch me
64)How could people try climb up on Gulliver’s body?
At first, they used ladders to try to climb up on Gulliver’s body.
65)When did the soldiers cut the ropes that fastened him to the machine?
When the soldiers realised he could not escape with his legs chained to the gate.
66)At what point/ when  could Gulliver stand up?
After the soldiers cut the ropes that fastened him to the machine.
67)What did Gulliver think of the scene around him?                        It was a pretty scene.
68)Describe the scene around the city?
There were lots of little fields and woods, the fields the size of small gardens and the trees only a little more than two metres tall.
69)What did some men bring on their vehicles?
Each vehicle carried food and drink for Gulliver.
70)How much Gulliver eat for his breakfast?
He emptied twenty of these vehicles for his breakfast.
71)What did Gulliver think of the food?
He did not know what the food was, but it tasted nice.
72)What was the king doing while Gulliver was eating?
As Gulliver was eating, the King was watching him with his servants and some of his family.
73)What was the king like?
He was about 28 years old and tall compared to the other people, with strong arms and a handsome face. His clothes were the same as a king would wear in a European country.
74) What did the king hold ? What for?
He held up a sword to protect himself.
75)How long was the sword?
 It was perhaps seven centimetres long.
76)How did Gulliver try to answer the king?
 Gulliver tried to answer in all the languages he knew: French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic.
77)Could the king understand any of the language Gulliver spoke?
No, he couldn’t. He understood nothing.
78)What did the people do after the king left?
After the King left, people from the city began to arrive to look at him again.
79)How was Gulliver about to lose his eye? How was Gulliver about to go blind?
Some of the little men decided to shoot arrows at him and one arrow nearly hit his eye.
80)How did the guards try to protect Gulliver?
The guards stopped them from climbing on Gulliver’s body. The guards arrested the six people who did this.
81)How did the guards try to punish people who hurt\ injure Gulliver?
They tied their hands together.
82)What did Gulliver do to punish people who hurt him?
How did Gulliver try to frighten people who shot arrow at him?
He picked them up one at a time and put five of them in his pocket. He laughed and moved the knife towards the little man's hands.                                                                                                                                 83)What did the guard think Gulliver would do with the one of the men?
They thought he was going to eat him .                                                                                                                          84)How did the man feel at the point?
He looked very frightened.
