CHAPTER FOUR

1- When did Gulliver leave England again?
     On 20 June, 1702.
2-What was the ship called? Who was the ship’s captain?
The Adventure. Captain John Nicholas.
3- What were the captain and the sailors planning to?
To go to India and at first.
4- Why did the voyage  go as  planned at first?
They reached the South of Africa.
5- Why did they stop at South Africa?                                                                                                 For fresh water. They discovered that the ship had a hole in its side which had to be repaired.
6- Why did they have to stay in south of Africa for most of the winter?
 The captain had recovered and the ship was ready for the seas once more.
7- In which direction did they go? Which island did they pass?                                                                They headed east, passing the island of Madagascar.
8- What was the first sign that the journey was difficult?
 The wind began to get stronger, so it was a difficult journey.
9- For how long did they sail against the wind?
For twenty days.
1o- Why was the Adventure moving slowly for forty days?
Because they were sailing against the wind.
11- When was Gulliver glad?
When the winds had stopped.
12-  What did the captain John expect to happen after the wind have stopped?
When the winds had stopped, he predicted that a great storm was coming.
13--When did the storm the captain warned of hit the ship?
Two days later.
14-How did they try to control the ship in the high winds?
They took down some of the sails.
15- How did the Adventure get lost in the sea\ got out of the planned course.?
They were hit by a great wind from the south and couldn’t control the ship so the storm drove the ship east.
16-Why were they lucky during this storm?
Their ship was strong after its repairs and they had good supplies of food.
 17-What was their main problem after the storm?
They did not have much fresh water
 18- What did the captain of the ship Adventure decide after the storm?
They decided to continue in the direction the wind.                                                                                           19-When did they see land ?
On 16 June 1703, the sailor saw land.
20- Why did the sailor call out to other sailors?
A sailor called out to say that he could see land some distance away.
 21- Why didn’t the captain anchor at the bay?
Because  the captain did not think it was deep enough to take their ship.                                                         22- How many people went ashore in a small boat ? What for?
Twelve men as well as Gulliver to get some fresh water.
23-What did Gulliver ask the king permission for? Why?
Gulliver asked for permission to go with the men because he liked to visit different countries.

24-What was strange about the beach the sailors landed/ arrived  on?
There were neither people nor fresh water.
25-What did the sailors decide to do when they didn’t find fresh water ? Why?
 The sailors decided to walk along the beach to look for a stream or a spring.
26-What did Gulliver decide to do while the sailors were looking for water?
Gulliver walked alone for about a kilometre away from the beach.
27-What was this side of the land like?
This side of the land did not look very interesting. It had no trees, was dry and full of rocks.
28-Why was it too late for Gulliver to return to the beach?
 Because the sailors were already in the small boat, rowing back towards the ship.
29-What prevented Gulliver from calling to the sailors to take him back?
He saw a huge giant walking in the water towards the small boat as fast as he could.
30-What did Gulliver do when he saw the giant attacking the small boat?
   He did not wait to see what happened to them, but turned around and ran away from the beach.
31-Gulliver was surprised when he climbed the hill. Give reasons
 He was surprised to see many fields, but the grass in the fields was perhaps six metres high.
32-How was the field of wheat Gulliver found different?
  The field of wheat which was about twelve metres high.
33-What was there at the end of the enormous field? How high was it?
 It ended with a wall that was at least forty metres tall, with trees behind it that were even taller.
34-Why was it impossible for Gulliver to climb the steps of the wall?
 Because every step was two metres high.
35-What did Gulliver see while he was looking for a way through the wall?
He saw another giant walking up the road towards the place where Gulliver stood.
36-How did Gulliver feel when he saw the second Giant? What did Gulliver do then?
He was terrified so Gulliver ran into a field of corn to hide.
37-What happened after the giant had said something in a loud voice?
Seven more giants appeared each carrying scythes.
38-How did Gulliver know that the other giants were workers?
Their clothes were less well made than the first giant's.
39-What order did the first giant give to the other seven giants?
To cut the wheat in the field where Gulliver was hiding.
40-What did Gulliver try to do when they began to cut the wheat?
 Gulliver tried to get away from them through the field but it was difficult.
41-Why was it difficult for Gulliver to walk quickly or far?
As the plants were very close together.
42-Where did Gulliver eventually find himself?
  Gulliver found himself in a part of the field where the wind or rain had pushed the plants flat.
43-Why was Gulliver afraid when he was in the field of wheat?
 Because he could hear the giants with their scythes moving closer and closer.
44-Why wasn’t Gulliver able to move in the field of wheat?
Because Gulliver was extremely exhausted so he was sure to die .
45-What did Gulliver think of when he was about to die\ lose his life?
He thought of his poor family who would be without a father or a husband.
46-Why did Gulliver blame himself for?
He blamed himself for going on this journey and not listening to his friends’ advice.
47-What did Gulliver remember when he was in a close call in the field of corn?
He remembered Lilliput, a place where he thought he was so strong and important.
48- What did Gulliver realise when he saw the giants?
He realised that nothing is big or small unless you compare it with something else.                                       49-What did Gulliver think there was\ must exist?
Perhaps there is another land where even these giants may feel small and unimportant.
50-Why was Gulliver worried when one of the giants walked towards him?
He would surely stand on Gulliver at any moment.
51-What did Gulliver do to attract the giant attention?
Gulliver called out as loud as he could.                                                         
52-Did Gulliver manage in attracting the giant’s attention? How do you know?
Yes he did. Because the giant stopped and looked around in surprise.
53-What did the Giant think of Gulliver at first?
He thought that Gulliver was a small dangerous animal.
54-How did the giant worker behave when he saw Gulliver?
He was amazed so he decided to carefully pick him up with his fingers to look at him closely.
55-How did Gulliver behave when he was caught by the giant worker?
Gulliver decided not move, although his fingers hurt his back.
56-Why was it intelligent / clever of Gulliver not to move?
The giant worker didn’t think Gulliver was dangerous and kill him.
57-What would happen to Gulliver if the giant worker dropped him?
He would die or at least he would be injured.
58-How big was the  giant ?
He was twenty metres tall.
59-Why did Gulliver begin to pray?
So that the giant would drop him \ throw him onto the ground.
60-When was Gulliver sure that the giant worker wouldn’t throw him onto the ground?
When he saw that the giant worker was pleased with Gulliver.
61-Why was the giant worker pleased when he found Gulliver?
Because Gulliver was talking.
62-Why was the giant worker hurting Gulliver’s back?
Because he was holding him between his giant fingers.
63-How could Gulliver make the giant understand he was hurting him?
He pointed to his back to show that he was hurting him.
64-Where did the giant worker keep Gulliver?
He carefully kept him in his pocket.
65-Who did the giant worker show Gulliver to?
He showed Gulliver to his master.
66-What did he think Gulliver was when he first saw him?
He thought he was an animal.
67-What did the master giant ask the other giants about?
He asked them if they had seen any animal like Gulliver before.
68-How did Gulliver show them that he wasn’t going to run away?
Gulliver walked up and down to show that he was not going to run away.
69-How did Gulliver show respect to the giant master?
He took off his hat and bowed to the farmer as a sign of respect.
70-What did Gulliver offer the giant?
He offered him a bag of gold coins.
71-Where did the farmer keep Gulliver ?
He put Gulliver in his enormous handkerchief.

He used the soft handkerchief to carry him home to show his wife.
 73-How did the farmer’s wife behave on seeing Gulliver?
She screamed like a child who has seen a big spider.
74-How did the farmer comfort his wife when she saw Gulliver?
He told her Gulliver could  stand up and talk and was nothing to be frightened of.
75-How many persons are there in the giants’ family?
There were six. His wife, his three children and their grandmother.
76-Where did the giant Keep Gulliver while having food?
 The farmer put Gulliver next to him on the table.
77-Why was Gulliver worried when he was on the table?
 He was worried he would fall because the table was ten metres high.
78-What did they feed Gulliver?
The wife put some bread and meat on a plate for him.
79-How could Gulliver eat when he was in the giant farmer’s house?
He had his own knife and fork in his pocket.
80-What sight pleased the children ?
Gulliver having food with a knife and a fork.
81-Why did Gulliver find it difficult to carry the cup of water to drink?
 The cup was so big that he found it difficult to lift it.
82-How did the farmer’s son try to play with Gulliver\ show his interest with Gulliver?
He picked Gulliver up and held him by my legs so high in the air.
83-How did the father\ farmer save Gulliver from his son?
His father quickly took Gulliver from his son and put him back on the table.
84-Why did Gulliver ask the farmer not to punish his son for bothering Gulliver?
So that he would love Gulliver.
85-What did Gulliver do to get along with the farmer’s son?
He asked his father not to punish him.
86-What did Gulliver do when he saw the  large cat?
He didn’t show he was afraid of it so that it wouldn’t attack him.

It was three time the size of a cow.
88-What did the baby want to do when she saw Gulliver?
She pointed at him and wanted to play with him.
89-Why did the baby girl want to play with Gulliver?
Because it thought he was a toy.
90-Why was Gulliver right to worry\ be filled with fear of the baby girl?
Because she was about to put Gulliver in her mouth.
91-How did Gulliver behave when he was about to be swallowed by the baby girl?
He cried out loudly, but this was not a very good idea.
92-What did the baby girl do when Gulliver shouted loudly?
She dropped Gulliver as if he was a rock to the ground.

To a trader called John Biddel, who was travelling back to London from Japan.

86- What did  John think of Gulliver when he told him about his adventure?
He thought he was completely mad.
87-When did John believe Gulliver ‘s adventures in Lilliput?
When he showed him the tiny cows and sheep and the painting inside his glove.
88-How did Gulliver reward the captain for rescuing him\ saving his life?
He could keep the sheep to give to his children when he got home.
89- How did the ship owner feel when Gulliver offered him the small sheep?
 He was very pleased and he fed the sheep on his best sea biscuits.

91- How did Gulliver feel when he arrived in England?
He was very happy to see his wife and family again.                                                                                            92- How was Gulliver able to get a lot of money for a larger house?
Gulliver sold his small animals for a lot of money.

He found life in the city difficult and work was hard to find.
94- Why was Gulliver optimistic about the Ship Adventure?

Because he was about to have an even bigger adventure on the seas.
